SD designed two nature play areas for toddlers and infants within the Nike Vivian Stringer Child Care Facility. Design prioritized the use of natural and tactile materials in each activity node. We designed diverse opportunities to make the space more accessible for those of all abilities, ages, and levels of play. The new toddler area features sand exploration, a large musical instrument, and a multitude of textures in the form of grassy areas, softscape pathways, stepping stones, logs, and a rock wall.
“Repurposed log rounds, river rock, and oak poles were added for children to independently explore and use freely.”
“Nature-inspired tactile play elements give kids the opportunity to engage their senses.”
“The infant area meanders through gently sloped grass mounds, stone pavers set in a labyrinth-like pattern, water feature, and willow tunnels.”
